All time fan favorite with a twist on the ole banana split. My kids love this treat anytime of the year. My middle requests this on her birthday each year. I like to serve it up with milkshakes.

Banana Split Cake ~ Old Soda-Fountain Favorite

Strawberry Sauce: In a saucepan crush 1 cup fresh or frozen unsweetened strawberries, thawed Add 1 Cup water Cook for 2 minutes; sieve Combine 3/4 Cup sugar and 2 TBS cornstarch; stir into sieved mixture Cook and stir till thickened and bubbly Cook and stir 2 more minutes Add a few drops of red food coloring; if desired Halve 3 Cups fresh or frozen unsweetened strawberries, thawed Stir berries into sauce Cover and chill for several hours. Makes 3 1/2 Cups of sauce.


  • 3 Cups All-Purpose Flour
  • 2 tsp. Baking Powder
  • 1 tsp, Salt
  • 1/4 tsp. Baking Soda
  • 1 Cup Butter or Margarine
  • 1 1/2 Cups Sugar
  • 1 tsp. Vanilla
  • 4 Eggs
  • 1 Ripe Medium Banana, Mashed (1/2 Cup)
  • 1/2 Cup Dairy Sour Cream
  • 1/2 Cup Milk
  • 1/2 Cup Instant Cocoa Mix
  • 1 Strawberry Sauce (Recipe is in "Summary")
  • 3 Bowls for batter + 1 Mixer Bowl


  1. Grease and lightly flour one 10-Inch fluted tube pan; set aside
  2. In medium bowl together flour, baking, powder, salt and baking soda
  3. In mixer bowl beat butter or margarine on medium speed of electric mixer about 30 seconds
  4. Add sugar and vanilla and beat till fluffy
  5. Add eggs, one at a time, beating 1 minute after each
  6. In small bowl stir together mashed banana, sour cream and milk
  7. Add dry ingredients and banana mixture alternately to beaten mixture beating on low speed after each addition till just combined
  8. In small bowl import 1 Cup of batter and fold cocoa mix in, stir gently till just mixed
  9. Spoon all of the plain batter into prepared pan
  10. Spoon cocoa batter on top in a ring, do not spread to edges
  11. Bake at 350* oven for 60 - 70 Minutes, or till cake tests done
  12. Place cake on wired cooling rack for 10 Minutes
  13. Remove from pan; cool thoroughly on rack
  14. Serve with Strawberry Sauce
